“Tranquil, warm, energising. I loved how all-inclusive it felt… cohesive and conducive to a productive creative environment. We were able to fully immerse ourselves in the work and the life there.”

“My favourite thing was the nature and the openness of the space, you had the joy of living communally while still having room to breathe.”

WHO WE ARE
Established in 2024, Crag Pit Studios is a non-profit family run space where we host artists for residencies and workshops. We are a welcoming and open space looking for unique projects and people to join our ever growing community of creative people.
ROSANNA MALLINSON – Artistic Director
Rosanna Mallinson is the artistic director at Crag Pit Studios. She is a director, dramaturge and theatre maker and the founding member of two theatre companies, Akimbo Theatre and ImmerCity. She has written and directed shows at Southwark Playhouse, Soho Theatre and Gaiety Theatre Dublin.
She has been the dramaturge for larger projects at Sadlers Wells to smaller projects at the Edinburgh Fringe. She has worked in collaboration with establishments like Opera Holland Park and Nordland Visual Theatre. Her longest running project was the immersive mystery Dead Quiet which ran in central London for three years. She trained at Jaques Lecoq in Paris and at Trinity College Dublin.

WHAT WE ARE ABOUT
Our aim is to bring people together to further their craft in a calm and nurturing environment. Crag Pit is a rambling old house surrounded by huge skies and wild nature that continues down to the sea. It has brought us a great deal of peace and creativity, and we hope it will inspire many exciting new projects. We are investing in artists who need their community to create, whether that is devising groups, theatre makers, musicians, bands or writers who need a break from the isolation of the work.
We are dedicated to supporting creatives by keeping the spaces at low cost and offering funded programmes. There is no pressure to leave our residencies with a finished project, it is important to take the time for play and exploration. The focus is on people over products, and all our Artists in Residence will be part of our community long term, with regular events and our ‘Crag Pit People’ newsletter.

REVIEWS FROM ARTISTS
WRITERS IN RESIDENCE
“Crag Pit House is a wonderful place to unwind, refresh the spirits and find one’s inner creative voice. Welcoming and informal, the house sits in a beautiful garden overlooking a nature reserve that leads directly to the sea right next to Aldeburgh. With a cosy communal kitchen/dining room, comfortable sitting room, large converted barn and a number of pavilions and outhouses, the house provides a range of facilities to promote discussion, reflection, performance and conviviality…I can’t recommend it highly enough.”
Carolyn Steel
Author of ‘Sitopia‘
“A stunning and tranquil escape from all the hectic distractions of the city, and the perfect place to write and think deeply”
Naomi Ishiguro
Author of ‘The Rainshadow Orphans‘
“Crag Pit is the perfect place for writers to escape from the distractions and pressures of their everyday routine. It’s a space that lets you keep total focus so you can make the next break through on a manuscript. The natural beauty around the house make thoughtful walks a pleasure and inspiration
Cecil Fenn
Author of ‘The Restorative Artist‘
“Managed to finish editing my second draft, so it went very well. The large tables and different places to write inside and out were very helpful especially as I could find places to write in solitude (such as the wagon) but also collaborative spaces to work.”
Alex
Writers Retreat
“I got a lot of work done on my novel. The multiple places to sit and write with space around me helped long periods of focus, and the long walks in the marshes and coast helped planning”

“It felt like a home away from home, and the barn space was just what we needed for professional focus”
Owen Bleach
Akimbo Theatre
“Living comfortably and having large space to rehearse meant we weren’t running around rehearsal room to rehearsal room. It meant we were able to stay focused on the task whilst having the support of a private kitchen and a peaceful environment to keep focused.”
Sam Critchlow
Palimpsest Project
“It was a perfect little stay in the Suffolk countryside. A great big house full of character and excellently equipped to focus on the artistic work. Felt peaceful and isolated from any distractions.”

“It’s one of the most productive (and fun) creative weeks I’ve ever had.”

“Our course went really well, and the setting definitely contributed to that. The sun bathed communal spaces meant everyone wanted to hang out and got to know each other very quickly… Team spirit really grew”
BADC Workshop Participant 2024
“It didn’t feel formal, it didn’t feel shabby, it felt like a massive shared family all coming together to create and grow together. A massive highlight of my professional and creative career.”
